Importing a Dog to Australia

I guess there's rising interest in the Japanese breeds down in Aus. Unfortunately, import regulations make it very pricey to import. Just how pricey? Since I seem to be answering this question a lot now, I'm just going to blog it.

Japan is a rabies free country so there is a 10 day quarantine upon arrival in Australia, and no rabies protocol. It does require quite a bit of time to clear all the hurdles to import a dog, so best to start early (you'll need a minimum of 42 days).
You can find a step by step guide here http://www.agriculture.gov.au/cats-dogs
The first step you'll need to take is to implant an ISO compatible microchip, and then apply for an import permit.

Here's where we begin to run into expenses. It costs 485 Australian Dollars to apply for the import permit (roughly 41,000JPY at the moment) http://www.agriculture.gov.au/cats-dogs/fees-for-cat-and-dog-import-permit-applications

Once you've received your permit you will want to make flight reservations for the dog. Here we run into another regulation that states that dogs must arrive in Australia as manifest cargo. Sorry folks, no flying in to pick up your dog to save on costs. Shipping is billed by size of the dog's crate, and I have never paid less than 200,000JPY to ship a pup to Australia. You will need to book the flight through a shipping agent in Japan like NIPPON Express.

Next you will need to make a reservation for the 10 day quarantine in Australia. This costs around 150 AUD/day, and the last time I shipped a pup the total came to 1800 AUD (roughly 155,000JPY at today's rate).

So, at this point you are already running up a bill of around 400,000JPY. This obviously does not include the price of the pup or all the veterinary work that needs to be done before it is eligible for import.

I won't list all the vet work you have to clear for import since that is listed in the official government link. I will say that since the import timeline and procedures are very exact, make sure you pay close attention, or hire someone to take care of the process for you. Total costs to import will probably cost a minimum of 600,000JPY, but most likely start at 700,000JPY.

Yup, like I said, it's costly.
